Front door sticking? It might be time for an upgrade

When we hear from troubled homeowners who have front door sticking issues in Kent, Essex or Greater London areas, more often than not the door in question was installed some time ago and/or is attached to a more ‘mature’ type of home. As well as irritating, this situation can potentially compromise the security of the property if it’s not addressed swiftly; considering around 70% of home break-ins gain entry through the front door.

Why is my front door sticking?

How long is a piece of string?! … Try stepping back and simply looking at your closed front door from a distance. Your front door could be sticking due to a number of reasons, including:

  1. Lack of lubrication? The door hinges or locking mechanisms may simply need to be oiled.
  2. Loose hinges? The door hinges may just need to be tightened up or replaced.
  3. Screw loose? The door screws might need to be tightened or replaced.
  4. Slack door jamb? The lower door post may have been pulled loose or hung incorrectly, causing it to stick.
  5. New flooring? For example, if you’ve just had a new carpet fitted this could be the reason your front door is sticking.
  6. Sticking from the side? It’s reasonable to assume that a build-up of paint layers over the years could be causing the door to stick.
  7. Sticking from the top? It’s most likely the sticking is caused by slight structural settling of the property, which naturally occurs over time.
  8. Swelling? Your front door may have swelled or warped due to hot or humid weather. A door that sticks in the winter months could also be due to drastic shifts in temperature over the seasons.
  9. Damp conditions? Your door may have absorbed moisture into it, especially if the bottom edge hasn’t been treated or painted properly.
  10. Only just been installed? It could be as simple as the finish sticking against the door frame or it may have been hung incorrectly.

Composite vs uPVC Doors? Why both come up on top

Deciding on a new door is not easy, especially when there’s plenty of great options to choose from. uPVC and composite doors are two of those fantastic options. Not convinced yet? Here’s why you can’t go wrong either of them:

uPVC Doors

Commonly found on homes for many years now, here’s what you can expect from a door constructed from uPVC:

  • Our uPVC doors are firmly sealed, ensuring they retain heat very well. This means they’ll save you considerable amounts on your energy bills.
  • Thanks to a range of stunning hardware, including handles and a number of different glass and colour options, uPVC doors look fantastic. Plus, they can be adapted to look just the way you’d like them to.
  • Renowned for it’s low maintenance qualities, a uPVC door will only require an occasional wipe down to continue looking great.
  • As uPVC is a highly durable material, a uPVC door will continue performing as it should for years.
  • Combining the sturdiness of uPVC with a high quality locking system, uPVC doors protect your home very well. Keep any would-be intruders at bay with a uPVC door.

Composite Doors

The combination of a number of high quality materials, composite doors have enjoyed a steady increase in popularity since their emergence on the market. Here’s what they offer you:

  • The finish on a composite door is of the highest quality. Combining this with beautiful glazing and hardware ensures for a door that achieves a stunning aesthetic.
  • Thanks to a Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) exterior, composite doors are heavily resistant to even the most severe weather conditions.
  • Our composites feature a foam core that is ultra-dense, which helps them to perform excellently in terms of thermal efficiency. And the better they perform in these terms, the lower your energy bills will be.
  • Composite doors are incredibly secure, making them ideal for protecting your home from potential intrusion. However, twin rebate composite doors, which have ‘Secured by Design’ accreditation are available, for those who are especially security conscious.
  • With a number of stunning styles and fantastic extras to choose from, composite doors are highly customisable.
  • Composite doors require very little maintenance to retain a quality finish. However, a guide on how to keep them looking their best is available here.

Both uPVC and composite doors offer the homeowner exceptional levels of quality; you can’t go wrong with either choice. If you’re interested in either set, why not get an online quote today? Or, you can call us on 01322 515960.

Naturally, we all try to save money wherever possible. After all, why would anyone want to spend more than they need too? However, this isn’t always the best course of action and often spending more can save you more money in the long run. This is clearly present in home improvement.  It is so easy to go for the cheaper options when buying things for your home, whether you are scrimping on replacing your light bulbs or sticking with those old, draughty single glazed windows, rather than replacing them with some energy efficient double or triple glazed windows.

What are Slide and Swing Doors?

Slide and Swing doors are becoming one of the most popular choices for UK homeowners, as a versatile replacement for standard patio doors.  One of the main reasons they are becoming so popular is that the slide and swing doors allow you to completely open up your living space. During the lovely, warm summer months you can open multiple doors and let the lovely warm air flow into your home.  As soon as the colder seasons start, you can close the doors and keep your home nice and warm, using one door individually to come and go as you please without letting all of the cold air in.
